| 1. Petition Success: Proof that you can make a
difference |
Earlier this month, the government of British
Columbia committed to protect five million acres of rainforest from
logging-an area approximately the size of New Jersey.
This incredible victory is the result of a decade-long campaign that
was hard fought by activists around the world and by many Care2
members. In fact, one of the final pushes of the campaign involved a petition signed by more
than 11,000 Care2 members, proof positive that you can and do make
a difference!
Best of all, the Great Bear victory has captured the imagination of the
world. It has appeared in over 1,000 news items across the globe,
reaching as far as Russia and India. It was featured on the front page
of the Washington Post, and mentioned on the front page of the New York
Times. This is good news not just for the Great Bear, but for
environmental causes everywhere -- because the approach ForestEthics
used to save the Great Bear will serve as a model for environmental
protection for years to come. Never before have logging companies,
corporations, environmental groups, aboriginal groups, local
communities and activists all come together to save a rainforest -- and
now, we've proven that it's possible.

And be sure to take a moment to savor this important victory!

| 2. Care2 New Feature: Care2 News Network! |
If you think big media doesn't pay enough attention to important
issues...
If you love knowing the latest on politics, human rights, the
environment, and other progressive issues...
Care2 has just launched a revolutionary news service that puts the
editorial control in your hands. You determine what makes it onto our
Front Page. Traditional news services have top down editorial control.
We've turned that on its head with our grass roots approach. You post
stories. You vote. You determine what gets Front Page attention. It's
extremely simple... and fascinating.
What's on the Front Page today?

Women's Day! |
Celebrate the power of women worldwide - send a fun, free e-card for
International Women's Day on March 8th!

| 4. Featured Opportunity: Films for Movie Lovers with a
Conscience |
Here's a
gift you can talk about all year long. Ironweed, a new DVD-of-the-month
club with a political edge, is offering gift subscriptions - a present
guaranteed to make fed-up liberals smile and maybe even change a
conservative's mind. By championing independent films Ironweed's film
selections are designed to spark discussions and get people to take
action on issues they care about.
Here's a sneak peak at some upcoming films:
- Something Other than Other:
Filmmakers and new parents Jerry and Andrea Henry talk about
discrimination, their multiracial son and their dream of an identity
for him beyond the "Other" check box.
- Salt of the Earth: This 1954
classic independent film, the only banned film in American history, is
as famous for the events surrounding it as for its radical ideas. Salt
of the Earth, based on real events surrounding a zinc miners' strike in
New Mexico, was filmed against opposition from the government and the
movie industry by a group of blacklisted filmmakers, including Herbert
J. Biberman of the Hollywood Ten, Paul Jarrico, and Michael Wilson.
- The Luckiest Nut in the World: A
lesson about the nutty economics of free trade taught by a singing
peanut and his hard-shelled backup group.
In order to make sure
everyone sees these movies Ironweed is offering Care2 members a special
free month trial. Ironweed DVD's are yours to keep - if you don't think
the films are great, you can cancel with no hassles. Check out Ironweed today!

| 5. Featured Action: Help Stop Canada's Cruel Seal
Hunt! |
The
largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet is set to
begin again in Canada next month.
By the end of the hunt, more than 300,000 seals are expected to be
clubbed or shot to death by fishermen who hunt seals off-season to pick
up extra cash by selling their skins. Almost all of their victims will
be babies -- some as young as 12 days old.
Polls consistently show that most Canadians oppose the hunt, but still
the Canadian government and fishing industry refuse to end it. But
there is new hope on the ice. Canada has a new Prime Minister, Stephen
Harper, and a new party in power. With enough public support, they may
consider ending this terrible hunt forever.
Sign
this petition now and send it to anyone who cares about protecting the
lives of Canada's seals.
