Sharp spike on GOES X-Ray Flux is quite unusual. There is usually a build up showing a more gradual climb in the way of a volcano setting to erupt. However, with tonight’s spike, it looks more like a lightening bolt. And when I say lightening bolt…I mean it.

Take a look at this most unusual solar flare prominence from the eastern limb:

Now that’s down right scary… Yes, we were expecting the return of sunspot region 786, but not like this. As you can see from this “far side” photo, regions 786 and 788 are making their way from the far side of the Sun, back around to facing Earth. Space Shuttle – Space Station

I have no doubt astronauts in both the space station and shuttle, have taken evasive actions. With the Space Station, the astronauts go into a special sealed room which protects them from solar radiation. Although it is not widely known publicly, I am waging the shuttle has a similar room to protect its passengers.

Look for a possible early return for Discovery. If solar activity maintains its current trend, I expect continued M-Class and perhaps X-Class flares to erupt. If this is the case, I expect the space shuttle to be called home early.

Watch the weather…

Watch for increased tornadoes, straight-line winds, micro-burst, and wind shears to occur within the next 72 hours. Also watch for rapid temperature fluctuation. I’m afraid this means more record breaking temperatures are on their way.
