The fall in numbers of appeal apps received since 2002 (871) suggests that LPAs were refusing a lot more planning apps then. This ties in with documentation from the early years indicating the alarm in the industry at that time that pubilc concern about phone masts was going to hinder the roll-out and that lobbying of politicians and councils was crucial. We know to our cost how successful they've been.

These figures seem to reflect a lag in the system too: 2005: 232 received, 405 decided.

FYI - I remember being told although I don't remember the source, that the percentage of successful telecom appeals by operators was  higher than for other planning appeals. It didn't surprise me.

Dear All,

TELECOMS MAST REFUSALS & NUMBER OF APPEALS MADE BY OPERATORS, BOTH RECEIVED & ALLOWED BY THE PLANNING INSPECTORATE SINCE 2002.

I thought the information below maybe of interest to LPAs, MPs and Telecoms Campaign Groups.

Since a similar question was raised by Caroline Spelman MP (Conservative) back in June, it appears the Government has received the information, presumably from the Planning inspectorate, and Yvette Cooper MP (Planning Minister) has issued a response, with figures, on the weblink below:

To ask the Deputy Prime Minister how many appeals to the Planning Inspectorate have been made by mobile phone operators since 2002; and how many have been successful.

Yvette Cooper (Minister of State, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) Hansard source

The following table details the number of planning appeals received, decided and allowed for Telecommunications (including radio/TV-Mast/Aerial/Dish/Antenna).
